He was as wild as the land he grew up in. Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, is a must see film for any horse lover, and anyone wishing to watch a good animated film.
The film follows the story of Spirit, a wild mustang, who is captured and sent to work in the establishing west. Spirit’s determination and ferocity however, win out, in a film that shows what true determination is.
The first thing that should be noted about this film, is the exceptional animation. It may be 12 years old, but it has some of the finest and most realistic animation ever produced. From the soaring scenery, to the majestic horses, you cannot help but marvel and what can be done with a pencil and some paper.
This film steers clear of the Disney style, and features animals that do not talk. Sure, we hear of voiceover of Spirit, but there is something so profound by this films rawness. It’s true that real horses were used for the noises of this film, and it should be commended. It sticks well clear of the cheesiness some films have when their animals talk. Spirit, if a film that stands out from so many.
Even without a constant flow of speech, the story is still powerful. In fact, words are not needed between the horses, small gestures, and movements easily convey what they mean. At times the story is quite emotional, but this can only be due to the fact of the brilliant film making an editing, something that should not be overlooked.
The soundtrack is again, perfect. The songs chosen suit the mood and atmosphere, and bring another level to this film.
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, will have you laughing, crying and cheering to the very end. Easily a 9/10.
